Welcome Back to The Maintenance Corner

Hello again — and welcome back.

If you have been wondering where The Maintenance Corner went, the short answer is: life happened. I have taken a few years out. Some of that time was for the best reason imaginable — the birth of my second son. Some of it was harder, including health challenges that meant stepping back from writing for a while. I am grateful to everyone who kept reading, shared old posts, or quietly waited. I have not forgotten this little corner of the internet, and I have not forgotten why I started it.

I am writing this now because I feel reinvigorated. The maintenance profession has not stood still while I was away, and neither has technology. From better diagnostic kit and environmental sensors to clearer guidance on damp and mould, drone surveys, and how we share knowledge online, there has never been a better time to come back. Property professionals still need clear, practical writing they can use on the next job — and construction students still need CPD that sounds like someone who has actually been on site.

So The Maintenance Corner is returning.

What’s new

Alongside the return of regular posts, there is a new website and new features. The aim is simple: make this a one-stop shop for interesting, useful articles on maintenance topics — building pathology, surveying tech, social housing practice, historic structures, and the day-to-day realities of keeping homes and buildings decent.

You will still get the same voice you had before: first-person, practical, Scotland and UK focused where it matters, and written for construction students, maintenance officers, planned maintenance officers, estate officers, surveyors, and anyone else who looks after stock for a living.

How you can get involved

I would love this to be a two-way street again, not a monologue. If The Maintenance Corner is going to be useful, it needs your engagement.

  • Subscribe by email so you do not miss new posts.
  • Reach out on The Maintenance Corner socials — say hello, share what you are working on, or tell me what you want covered next.
  • Leave notes on the website about your own experiences. Real case notes from the field teach more than theory ever will.
  • Sit back on your lunch break, play a puzzle if that is your thing, and catch up with the latest articles when you have a quiet half hour.

Whether you are studying for a surveying qualification, running repairs for a housing association, or managing an estate on a tight budget, I hope you find something here that helps.

Every day is a school day

That phrase has always been the heart of this blog. I do not claim to know everything — I never have — but I do believe that sharing what we learn on site makes all of us better at the job. After a few years away, I am ready to learn in public again, and I hope you will join me.

Thanks for reading, and welcome back to The Maintenance Corner. If you found this useful (or even just nice to see again), please subscribe via email, drop a comment, or find us on socials. Every day is a school day — and it is good to be back.
